What is sustainability reporting compliance in Nigeria?
Sustainability reporting compliance means identifying the requirements that apply to your organisation, preparing the required disclosures and retaining a defensible record behind every reported figure. It is not a single form or one regulator's checklist.
For many Nigerian companies, the route connects the FRC adoption roadmap, SRG 1, IFRS S1 and IFRS S2, and sector oversight such as the SEC's requirements for public companies and significant public-interest capital-market operators. Other requirements may arise from an export market, lender, buyer or group reporting instruction.
Start here to find the right route. Each compliance page covers the detailed requirement.
Which sustainability reporting rule applies to your organisation?
The applicable route depends on your entity type, regulator, reporting period and commercial exposure. Begin with status and obligation before selecting software, templates or disclosure headings.
If more than one row applies, the requirements may overlap. Do not assume that satisfying a buyer automatically satisfies a regulator, or that a sustainability report replaces a product-level export obligation.
What does the FRC require from reporting entities?
The FRC sets Nigeria's adoption route for IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards and provides the local readiness and reporting guidance. The relevant work includes governance, implementation planning, data, controls, professional responsibilities and the presentation of the disclosure.
The FRC's Sustainability Reporting Guideline 1 sets requirements covering the readiness assessment, annual-report placement, reporting policies, controls, registration and sign-off. Read the detailed FRC sustainability reporting page before turning those requirements into an internal calendar.
What does the SEC require from public companies?
The SEC requires public companies and significant public-interest capital-market operators to prepare for IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 on the FRC timetable. Its oversight does not create a separate sustainability standard, but it adds capital-market monitoring and preparation requirements.
The SEC's September 2026 sustainability-disclosure circular required covered entities to address governance, gap assessment, implementation timing, data systems, controls, assurance, training and expected reporting year in their implementation plans. The circular states that mandatory reporting for covered public-interest entities begins for accounting periods starting on or after 1 January 2028; SMEs enter mandatory adoption for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2030.
What are IFRS S1 and IFRS S2?
IFRS S1 covers general requirements for sustainability-related financial disclosures, while IFRS S2 covers climate-related risks and opportunities. Together they provide an investor-focused baseline rather than a list of every environmental or social activity undertaken by a company.
The IFRS Foundation's introduction to the ISSB Standards says the disclosures are designed for investors, lenders and other creditors and that IFRS S2 fully integrates the TCFD recommendations. Nigerian teams should apply the standards through the FRC's adopted reporting route, not treat global guidance as a substitute for the local requirements.
How should you prepare the data behind a compliant disclosure?
Build the reporting record before trying to write the final disclosure. Assign an owner, reporting boundary, collection date, evidence requirement, calculation method, reviewer and approval status to every required figure and narrative claim.
For emissions reporting, separate grid electricity, generator fuel, equipment fuel and vehicle fuel at the point of collection. Record the evidence when the data enters the process, not when an assurer asks for it months later.
Emvert currently supports Scope 1 and Scope 2 reporting through bill upload and spreadsheet import. Each supported figure retains its calculation record, factor and version; Scope 3 is in development.
Do Scope 3, CBAM and EUDR belong in the same compliance process?
They may draw on related business data, but they are not interchangeable requirements. Scope 3 is a value-chain emissions category, CBAM is an EU carbon-border mechanism for specified goods, and EUDR is a separate due-diligence regime for covered commodities and products.
Keep one governed evidence layer where reuse is legitimate, then map each output to its own obligation. Read the Scope 3 emissions, EU CBAM and Nigeria and EUDR Nigeria pages before defining the workflow.
Is the FRC National Digital Platform open for sustainability filings?
The FRC has announced development and phased deployment of a National Digital Platform, but its announcement does not provide a complete public filing process or final technical submission specification.
The FRC's National Digital Platform announcement says further guidance and technical directives will support onboarding and compliance. Emvert does not currently file through an FRC portal.
How does Emvert support sustainability compliance work?
Emvert organises the current Scope 1 and Scope 2 reporting record so that reporting teams can collect, review and trace supported figures before disclosure. It does not guarantee compliance, replace professional judgement or claim endorsement by a regulator or standards body.
The workflow is built around the work Nigerian teams actually need to control:
Upload bills and structured spreadsheets rather than reconnecting every source system.
Separate grid electricity from generator and other fuel consumption.
Keep evidence with the figure from entry through review.
Track ownership, completion and approval across the reporting cycle.
Produce supported IFRS S1/S2 and GRI reporting outputs from the available record.
Export a reporting record for review and assurance preparation.
If you need Scope 3, direct regulator filing, automated meter connections or ERP integrations, ask for the current product status during the demo. We will say what is available and what is not.
Where should your compliance work begin?
Begin by confirming the entity classification, first reporting period, applicable regulator and required reporting standard. Then turn those requirements into owners, dates, evidence and review steps.
Book a demo to map that work against your reporting cycle. The session uses your data questions and ends with a written quote in Naira. A demo is not regulator approval.
