What the FRC and SEC require, which companies they apply to, when each obligation starts, and what the international standards underneath them actually ask you to disclose.
Nigerian sustainability reporting is not one rule. It is a national framework built on an international standard, applied to different categories of company on different dates, sitting alongside a set of cross-border requirements that arrive through your customers rather than your regulator.
That sounds more complicated than it is. Underneath, there is a single structure — the four pillars of IFRS S1 and S2 — and almost everything you will be asked to disclose is an answer to one of them. Learn the structure once and every framework on this page becomes a mapping exercise rather than a separate project.
This section explains each piece in the order it will reach you: who has to report and when, what the Nigerian rules say, what the international standards underneath them require, and which cross-border obligations may land first.
Three mandates, three categories of company. The dates below are the ones Emvert plans against; confirm your own position against the primary sources at the bottom of this page.

The filing date is not your deadline
A sustainability disclosure reports on a completed financial year. The report filed in your first mandatory year describes data collected the year before — which means the deadline that actually matters is the point at which you start recording, not the point at which you file.

Probably, eventually, and possibly sooner than the timetable suggests. The FRC mandate covers public interest entities, which is a wider category than listed companies and typically includes banks, insurers, pension operators and large unlisted businesses. Separately, if you supply a listed company or a bank, their Scope 3 reporting will generate a data request to you regardless of whether you have your own obligation yet.
Usually not. A voluntary sustainability report is a communications document. A sustainability disclosure under these rules is a structured filing with defined contents, prepared on a stated basis, capable of being assured, and presented alongside your financial reporting. The two can share content, but one is not a substitute for the other.
Assurance expectations are being phased in across most jurisdictions that have adopted the ISSB standards, typically beginning with limited assurance over greenhouse gas figures. Limited assurance is a lower bar than a financial audit, but it still requires that your numbers can be traced and your method explained. Confirm the current Nigerian position with your auditor — this is an area where the requirement is moving.
Recording electricity consumption and fuel purchases for every site, this month, with the bill or receipt attached. That is the data every framework on this page ultimately asks for, and it is the part that cannot be recovered later without disproportionate cost.
A summary of a regulation is not the regulation. These are the primary documents this page is based on.
