Structured digital submission, and what it changes.

Sustainability reporting is moving toward structured, machine-readable filing. That changes how you should hold your disclosure long before it changes how you submit it.

Why structure beats a document

Financial reporting made this transition a decade ago. A set of accounts stopped being a printed document that happened to contain numbers and became a structured dataset that could be rendered as a document. Sustainability reporting is on the same path, and the IFRS Foundation has published a digital taxonomy for exactly this purpose.

When a disclosure exists only as a word-processed file, every downstream step is manual: someone re-keys figures into a portal, someone else checks them, and a third person finds the discrepancy a week later. Structured data removes that entire class of error.

It also changes what year two looks like. A disclosure held as structured data can be compared, restated and rolled forward. A disclosure held as a PDF has to be retyped.

What holding it as data gives you

  • One source, several renderingsThe board pack, the filing copy and the website summary are three views of the same underlying figures. They cannot disagree, because there is nothing to disagree with.
  • Completeness checks before you fileA structured disclosure knows which required items are unanswered. A document does not — it just looks finished.
  • Comparatives that carry forwardPrior-year figures roll into the current disclosure automatically, and a restatement is recorded as a restatement rather than a silent overwrite.
  • Machine-readable for the people who read youInvestors, lenders and data providers increasingly consume disclosures through automated pipelines. A structured filing is read accurately; a PDF is scraped, and scraping introduces errors you never see.

The filing path

  1. AssembleFigures, narrative and evidence are collected against the required disclosure list through the year rather than in the final month.
  2. CheckEvery required disclosure is either answered or carries a stated reason for omission. Nothing is silently missing.
  3. ApproveReviewers sign off section by section, and approvals are recorded against the specific version.
  4. Submit and retainExport the filing copy, submit through the regulator’s channel, and retain the exact version you filed — unaltered, so a later restatement has something to be a restatement of.

File with confidence, before the deadline files you.

Companies that start now collect a full clean year before they ever have to file. Companies that start late reconstruct one — and that is the expensive part.
